NHTSA Report Shows Decline in Automobile Fatalities

IN THE NEWS: On December 10, 2011 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued its report concerning 2011 Motor Vehicle Crashes. The report shows a 1.9% decline in the number of fatalities in automobile accidents across the United States from 2010 to 2011. In addition to the reduction in the number of fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents, NHTSA reports that there was a nationwide reduction of 1.5% in the total number of police-reported crashes.

While there was an overall reduction in the number of people injured in automobile accidents from 2010 to 2011, NHTSA reports that the change is not statistically significant. The report did indicate a relatively significant increase in fatalities and injuries from accidents involving large trucks, motorcycles, and pedestrians.

According to the report, in Georgia there were 24 fewer fatalities in 2011 than in 2010 representing a 1.9% decline. Despite the overall reduction in fatalities, deaths involving distraction-affected crashes increased by 1.9 percent again showing the significance of drivers paying attention while they drive.

We urge everyone to drive safely and not to text while driving. The slightest distraction in Atlanta traffic can have devastating consequences.
