What to do if you've been injured by a drunk driver

During holidays in the United States, it is not uncommon for Americans to celebrate with family and friends. The Fourth of July is a popular holiday for many who like to enjoy their time going to a baseball game with friends, hitting the pub for a couple drinks or hanging out at a backyard barbeque. During these times, especially in the hot summer sun, it is not uncommon for people to have a few drinks too many. Unfortunately, too many then decide to get behind the wheel and attempt to drive home. This can lead to serious or even deadly results.

Someone who is driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol not only jeopardizes the safety of themselves and passengers in their car, but the health and safety of others sharing the road with them, as well as pedestrians who may be on or near the roads.

If you have been the victim of a car wreck involving a drunk driver and are injured, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. There are a few things to keep in mind though. The insurance company may try to settle with you for a lesser amount. While this might be tempting, it is important to understand that some injuries to not reveal themselves right away. If you sign a release of liability form, you will not be allowed to make other claims, regardless of how bad things become.

It is also not uncommon to have more leverage after the other driver is found guilty of drunk driving. Thus, waiting might prove to be more valuable to you in getting the compensation you deserve. Compensation may cover not only medical expenses and rehabilitation costs, but lost wages and pain and suffering as well.
