How dangerous are school bus accidents?

The last possible thing parents want to think about when they lead their children onto a school bus is the possibility that their child could be seriously injured or killed in an accident. Unfortunately, as much as we offer safeguards to assure that children will be safe on and near a bus, accidents still do happen.

Thankfully, fatal accidents involving buses are rare, though they do happen. Between 1994 and 2004, there were 71 passengers on school buses who were killed. Technology and additional safety features have been put in place since those times, but still accidents do happen.

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more children are killed by being hit by buses than while on or in a school bus. Lesser concerns but still hazards also include diesel exhaust, though this too has been improved through regulations and improved and cleaner technology.

When sharing the road with other vehicles, it is impossible to make riding on a school bus completely safe. Thankfully, accidents are relatively rare, and when they do occur, they are often minor in nature. A school bus will fair far better than a small passenger car when involved in an accident, which would also help protect children. If you have been involved in a commercial vehicle accident, whether it was a coach bus, school bus or a taxi accident, you might be entitled to compensation. This may include money to cover your rehabilitation costs and medical expenses, pain and suffering and possibly lost wages due to injuries related to your injury.
