When Critical Information Was Missed In Your Pap Smear
The Papanicolaou test (commonly known as the “Pap smear”) is a cervical cancer screening tool that was invented by the physician Georgios Papanikolaou in the late 1920s. Understood at its most basic level, the Pap smear allows cytotechnologists (trained individuals who perform the initial screen of Pap smear slides) to identify changes in cervical cells. By examining the extent and nature of the changes, pathologists can then identify women who are at risk for developing invasive cervical cancer.
Pap Smear And Cervical Cancer
Utilization of systematic Pap smears has resulted in a significant decline in the number of deaths from cervical cancer for women in Georgia and throughout the United States. When done correctly, the Pap smear is an amazing screening tool:
- It literally allows for early recognition and effective treatment of preinvasive cancer
- While the reported numbers vary widely, indications are that deaths from cervical cancer have been reduced by up to 90 percent through utilization of regular Pap smears
- Some commentators believe that cervical cancer could be eliminated if all women had regular Pap smears that were read properly
When done incorrectly, it can lead to the progress of a serious illness — something we can fight through a medical malpractice claim.
Pap Smear, False Negatives, And Cervical Cancer
Unfortunately, due largely to profit motives and corporate requirements mandating that screeners review more slides per day than they reasonably can, clear cytological problems on Pap smears continue to be missed with cancerous slides improperly reported as negative (false negatives).
As a result, women throughout the Southeast and across the country continue to die from cervical cancer that could have and should have been caught in time for effective treatment. In addition to the problems at the labs that review Pap smears, some physicians have become overly reliant on the Pap smear to the detriment of their patients thus failing to recognize clear clinical signs of cancer. Again, the result is women who are dying from an entirely preventable disease.
